"It will open up a new opportunity to change the lives of young people".

Being a host with Nightstop is a unique and rewarding volunteering role. We spoke to Janet, one of our hosts, to ask her about her volunteering experience supporting young people at risk of homelessness.

2020 has been an incredibly busy year for Nightstop.

The pandemic has badly affected local young people and we've been on hand to support those at risk of homelessness by providing emergency accommodation, crisis support, counselling and mediation services.

We couldn't deliver our emergency accommodation service without the commitment of our team of amazing volunteer hosts. Hosting is a unique and rewarding volunteer role. Our hosts welcome young people into their own home for a couple of days or a few weeks, providing a warm, safe place to stay, meals, access to a shower and somewhere to wash their clothes during the course of their placement.

But hosts provide so much more than this; their support and encouragement enables young people to develop vital life skills and confidence to help them take the next steps towards living independently. Janet (pictured above) has been hosting with Nightstop since February 2020. When asked about her volunteering experience, she said she had been inspired to contact Nightstop after reading an article about hosting. Janet said, "No two days are the same when you're a Nightstop host. The young person often sleeps late as they now feel safe and often need rest. I provide breakfast. The young person may have meetings with Nightstop during the day. At first they are nervous but soon settle in. Every young person is different and understanding and patience are important".

Janet had a successful professional career and says that hosting gave her a new direction after this. She said, "I feel part of a professional team with a sense of purpose. I have new skills and know how to use them". When asked what she would say to anyone thinking about hosting, Janet highly recommended the experience saying, "It will open up a new opportunity to change the lives of young people. There is training and incredible support from the Nightstop team so there's no need to be concerned. You won't regret joining Nightstop".

If Janet's experience has inspired you and you live in Wyre Forest or South Worcestershire and have a spare room you could give to a young person in need, get in touch today to find out more about hosting. Speak to our volunteer coordinator, Lisa, on 01562 743111 or email info@wfnightstop.org
